The Heugh Battery Museum aims to educate its visitors on part of The First World War that touched many lives around Hartlepool on 16th December 1914. As The Heugh Battery Museum engaged German warships in the North East Bombardment which would be remembered by many and alerted the UK to the dangers of war. The Heugh Battery Museum encourages people to understand a personal home war and world conflict that impacted on both on those at the Front but also those who are left behind at home. The venue is divided across three levels with the underground magazines, the parade ground and main museum with the Observation Point tower providing panoramic views of the North Sea and surrounding coast line. Please remember: The Heugh Battery Museum is volunteer run and funded through visitors and local business support, but does need sponsorship for its many projects, please be part of our remberance and support us.
We would like all of our visitors to enjoy the Heugh Battery Museum as much as we do. We therefore ensure that our staff and volunteers are available, helpful and courteous. We work hard to ensure that our displays are accessible to our visitors with clear signage to explain what items are and what they were used for. If signage is unclear or unavailable members of staff are trained to answer all questions you might have. If we can't answer your question we will always endeavour to find out for you. As many parts of the Heugh Battery Museum that can be adapted for disabled access have been altered. However, due to the venues design and being a Grade II listed monument there are restrictions in place. However all areas of the Heugh Battery Museum are kept clean and clear of clutter to ensure your visit is enjoyable.

The aims and objectives of the Heugh Gun Battery Trust Limited, as quoted in the Memorandum and Articles of Association, are to: Developing and improving the environment by preserving buildings and sites of historic importance, and develop environmentally sympathetic initiatives that will encourage regeneration to work in harmony with the local environment. Provide and develop local historic sites. Promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment. Promote the conservation of the physical and natural environment by developing a local historic site on the Headland of Hartlepool for the benefit of the public. In carrying out the aims and objectives the company will also focus on: Providing skill training relevant to the needs of the project. Develop employment generating initiatives that will be seen as sustaining employment opportunities. Encouraging volunteers to participate in the regeneration programme of the area.
The aims and objectives of the Heugh Gun Battery Trust Limited, as quoted in the Memorandum and Articles of Association, are to: The Heugh Gun Battery Trust was formed in July 2000 with the remit to explore the feasibility of the restoration of the former Heugh Battery. With this in mind the Heugh Gun Battery Trust Limited was inaugurated in April 2003. Registered with Companies House in England No. 4774077. The Heugh Gun Battery Trust was granted Charitable status in October 2004. Registered Charity No. 1106882
The site was relinquished by the Ministry of Defence in 1956, and ownership passed to Hartlepool Borough Council. The Heugh Gun Battery Trust was founded in 2000, with an overall aim to promote the history of the Heugh Battery Museum. The Heugh Gun Battery Trust was granted a 50 year lease for the Heugh Battery Museum site from Hartlepool Borough Council in 2003 which permits it to "reconstruct the Heugh Battery site and to develop the Demised Premises as a visitor centre, tourist attraction with such other uses as a ancillary thereto". The lease requires the Trust to secure Scheduled Monument Consent pursuant to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and all relevant planning consents and licences necessary for the execution of any works requiring such permissions. In effect, this requires the Trust to liaise closely with English Heritage and with the Council Planning Department when planning any capital works at the site. The Trust is a member of the North East Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). Thus the principal interested parties are: English Heritage Hartlepool Borough Council MLA
