Education & Learning

Through interactive learning, historical collections and lectures the Heugh Gun Battery museum offers an educational programme suited to students from National Curriculum KS1 to degree level.

Take this unique opportunity to discover about artillery used by soldiers, life in the trenches and on the home front both during the two World Wars and after.

We encourage hands-on, interactive workshops tailored towards what you are currently teaching in the classroom and will work closely with you to ensure that your students enjoy and benefit from the day.

Heugh Battery Hartlepool

What to See & Do

Our original barrack room is filled with historical collections and an interactive touch screen computer. The walls are filled with information to keep both children and adults interested and entertained throughout their visit.

Our parade ground is home to a Chieftain tank and many other military vehicles. The incredible display of field artillery guns are a unique sight and our guides are happy to explain their history to visitors.

The Observation Point has incredible views across the North Sea and was home to the communication equipment during the WWI bombardment of Hartlepool. See the communication equipment and find out how far the ships are out at sea.

The gun barbettes have the large defence guns that would have previously protected our shores. Visitors are always impressed by the size of the guns that were used to protect the local population of Hartlepool.

The underground magazine has the original shell hoists used in both World Wars offering a unique insight into how a gun battery was adapted for use in both. The underground corridors also house some of the museums collections for visitors to enjoy.

The RA store has been recreated so visitors can see where the soldiers would have got their stores from during their stay at the Battery.

The memorial garden offers a chance to reflect on the true cost of conflict. Both children and adults have the opportunity to place crosses in remembrance and enjoy the bitter beauty of John McCrae Flanders Field poem.
